The World Justice Project: Turkey ranks 123rd out of 128 countries concerning respect to fundamental rights

The World Justice Project® (WJP), a Washington DC based human rights NGO, published its annual Rule of Law index. According to the Rule of Law Index 2020, Turkey ranked 107th out of 128 countries in overall score.

When it comes to Factor 1 namely ‘Constraints on Government Powers’, Turkey ranked 124th out of 128 countries -just ahead of Cambodia, Egypt, Nicaragua and Venezuela-. It indicates how Turkey’s Executive Presidency System, which came into force in 2017, has removed all checks and balances on the Government’s power. 

Finally, with regard to Factor 4 named ‘Fundamental Rights’ Turkey ranked 123rd out of 128 countries -just ahead of Iran, Egypt, China, Venezuela and Myanmar-.
