Lawyer Barkın Timtik Subjected Torture Under Police Custody

Lawyer Barkin Timtik who was taken into custody on 5th of August 2017, was referred to Istanbul Courthouse, today. She and other 42 peaceful protestors were taken into custody while a peaceful action to support the hunger strike of Nuriye Gulmen and Semih Ozakca.

Barkin Timtik’s photos taken in the Istanbul Courthouse revealed that she was tortured during police custody.  Eyewitnesses who were detained with Barkin Timtik and released yesterday, had alleged that she was taken a different section (of police HQ) and tortured by male police officers.

According to the People’s Law Bureau, the investigating prosecutor and the peace criminal judge gave judicial control decision without taking her statement not to witness the traces of torture applied to her.

Along with lawyer Barkin Timtik, lawyer Gulseren Yoleri (who is chairwoman of IHD-Human Rights Association’s Istanbul branch) also was taken into custody because of same peaceful action and she is still under custody.

 

 

 

 

UPDATE : IHD-Human Rights Association announced that lawyer Gulseren Yoleri was released with judicial control restriction.

 

There has been a relentless campaign of arrests which has targeted fellow lawyers across the country. In 77 of Turkey’s 81 provinces, lawyers have been detained and arrested on trumped-up charges as part of criminal investigations orchestrated by the political authorities and conducted by provincial public prosecutors. As of today, 522 lawyers have been arrested and 1315 lawyers are under prosecution.
