The International Observatory for Lawyers in Danger (OIAD) denounced arbitrary arrests of Turkish lawyers in Izmir

Paris based The International Observatory for Lawyers in Danger (OIAD) (which is an initiative of the French National Bar Council, the Consejo General de la Abogacía Española (Spain) and the Consiglio Nazionale Forenze (Italy)) denounced arbitrary arrests of Amnesty International’s Turkey branch chair lawyer Taner Kilic and other 22 lawyers.

OIAD denounced the arrest of Taner Kilic and other lawyers and urged to abandon all charges against them.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Lawyer Taner Kilic who is chair of Amnesty International’s Turkey branch and other 22 lawyers were taken into custody 6th June 2017, in Izmir. Then, Taner Kilic and 15 other lawyers were arrested and 6 lawyers were released with judicial control rule.

Since 15th of July 2016, 35 lawyers have been arrested in Izmir.

There has been a relentless campaign of arrests which has targeted fellow lawyers across the country. In 77 of Turkey’s 81 provinces, lawyers have been detained and arrested on trumped-up charges as part of criminal investigations orchestrated by the political authorities and conducted by provincial public prosecutors. As of today, 522 lawyers have been arrested and 1315 lawyers are under prosecution.
