According to a report published by the Center for Lawyers’ Rights of Diyarbakir Bar Association, the lawyers registered with Diyarbakir Bar Association are under systematic judicial harassment.
The report reveals that there are seventy-eight ongoing investigations and prosecutions against at least sixty-eight members of the Diyarbakir Bar. Former presidents of Diyarbakir Bar Associations, Fethi Gümüs (1990-1994) and Mehmet Emin Aktar (2008-2012) are amongst these lawyers. Gümüs and Aktar were sentenced to 7 years and 6 months and 6 years and 3 months in prison (respectively) under Turkey’s overly broad anti-terror provision.
